An Introduction to Praisesong for the People by Amanda Johnston, Texas Poet Laureate.

Greetings, friends!

Thanks for stopping by. I'm so glad you are here. As the Texas Poet Laureate and a 2024 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow, I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this statewide poetry project with you. Thank you to the Academy and the Mellon Foundation for making Praisesong for the People possible.

Praisesong for the People is a love letter to everyday folks in Texas. I've invited some amazing poets who call this place home to share original poems celebrating people in their communities who've positively impacted their lives. Showing up on and off the page is how we thrive collectively and celebrate what makes a place a home: the people.

In small, large, and unexpected ways, we see each other and act when needed and that action makes all the difference in our daily lives. The poems shared here are just a glimpse of the ways we connect. Who would you praise with a poem? I encourage you to write a praise poem and share it with those who've made a difference in your life. Think of your friends, neighbors, and strangers who lent a helping hand, listened from the heart, and made things a little brighter. Take a moment to write a poem and let them know you appreciate them today.

Be sure to subscribe to the Praisesong Newsletter for updates and new poems in your inbox. Follow us on Instagram and X @txpraisesong. We'll also share event details about readings coming to your region this fall and special writing projects in the spring.

Remember, poetry is for the people. Let's spread love together through letters and verse.

Warmly,

Amanda
